Remembering Cebu and the Philippines today.
One of the things that attracts me to Republika ng Pilipinas is the friendly people. Here in the US as I walk down the street I am lost in a sea of unsmiling, uncaring, unfriendly faces. I smile at people sometimes but I am usually met with a frown. Don’t know why that is. I’m not that ugly am I? I dress well and keep myself neat and clean. I’m not malodorous. Not many smiles though. Ah, but in the RP I am met with smiles wherever I go. The clerks in the stores, the workers in the restaurants, the cab drivers and just ordinary people walking down the street. Heck, even the security guards in the Philippines smile. In the US we are so insular, so fearful of strangers. In Pilipinas the people are outgoing and fun loving. Every once in a while I need to return to my post “The Land of Smiles” and remind myself of the good people of the Philippines so that those fotos can bring a smile to me again. If you are in the US, will you do me a favor today? When you venture out into public, take the time to look someone in the eyes and smile at them. If they smile back it will make your day. Trust me.
Ah Cebu. Mingaw, Cebu, mingaw.
